Tucci Celebrates Italy’s Culinary Legacy in New Series
NEW YORK — Stanley Tucci is back in Italy, this time showcasing the rich and diverse culinary landscape in his new food-travel series, “Tucci in Italy.” The Golden Globe and Emmy-winning actor takes viewers on a journey, celebrating his Italian heritage less than three years after his previous show was canceled.
“I think this time around we’re doing a deeper dive into the stories and showcasing the beauty of each region,” Tucci explains. The series features a range of experiences, from dining at a three-Michelin-star restaurant in Milan that grows its own vegetables to cooking fish alongside local anglers by the Sarca River.
“I’m exploring the connections between the land, its people, and the beloved food of Italy,” Tucci shares, emphasizing his passion for understanding the essence of his homeland.
Each episode highlights different regions, including Tuscany, Trentino-Alto Adige, Lombardy, Abruzzo, and Lazio. Filmed over six months, from January to July 2024, Tucci expresses his appreciation for the people he meets along the way. “Despite the challenges of navigating Italy’s diverse landscapes, the warmth of the people makes it all worthwhile,” he says.
In Tuscany, viewers can see Tucci enjoying hearty dishes like lampredotto, a traditional sandwich, and beef tongue stew. Meanwhile, in the picturesque region of Trentino-Alto Adige, he skis and savors local delicacies like beef goulash and polenta.
Interestingly, Tucci’s latest project comes after CNN’s “Searching for Italy” was canceled, despite its Emmy success. Many of the same production team have joined him in this new endeavor, using advanced production techniques to enhance the visual appeal of the series.
Exploring Deeper Issues
“Tucci in Italy” goes beyond just food; it touches on relevant social issues within the country, including immigration and family dynamics. The series reflects on the experiences of immigrants, particularly Sikhs, who significantly contribute to Italy’s dairy industry, as well as Ethiopian migrants facing prejudice.
“There’s always a darker side to every country,” Birmingham, an executive producer, says. “Italians value food and family, but we also wanted to explore what family means in today’s context.”
Tucci, who envisioned the show nearly two decades ago, aims to reveal the complexities of Italy, breaking the stereotype that it’s solely about sunshine and pizza. “While there’s truth to those images, it’s not the whole story,” he asserts.
In a poignant episode, Tucci suggests a visit to Lombardy after learning about a gay couple grappling with legal challenges regarding the adoption of their child due to lack of recognition for same-sex adoptions in Italy.
A Unique Host
As one of many celebrity travel hosts, Tucci stands out for his genuine love and passion for Italy. Birmingham notes, “He truly cares about the people he meets and the stories he tells.”
One memorable moment includes his visit to Siena during a traditional horse race. After the race, people from different districts gather for lively dinner parties, celebrating their community through song and camaraderie.
“It’s fascinating to see how traditions thrive, yet also adapt over time. There’s no reason we can’t cherish the past while embracing change,” Tucci remarks.
“Tucci in Italy” promises to be a refreshing take, blending the allure of Italy’s culinary delights with the heartfelt stories of its people, reflecting a nation’s beauty in all its complexity.
