The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is taking action to protect consumers by ordering food and drug manufacturers to eliminate a dye known as Red 3 from their products. This dye has a controversial history; it was banned from cosmetics and non-oral medications decades ago due to studies linking it to cancer in rats. Despite this, it remained approved for use in food products until now, leading to concerns from health advocates.
Consumers are encouraged to check the labels of their favorite snacks and treats for Red 3, which is also referred to as erythrosine or FD&C Red No. 3. While some companies have opted for safer alternatives, many products still contain this ingredient.
Here are some categories of products where Red 3 is commonly found:
Candies
For those with a sweet tooth, candies like Brach’s Conversation Hearts and Candy Corn use Red 3. However, some popular options like Swedish Fish and Wild Cherry Lifesavers use a different dye, Red 40.
Baked Goods and Snacks
Red 3 is often present in baked goods, especially those with red icing. For example, Betty Crocker’s Red Decorating Icing contains Red 3, while Pillsbury’s Funfetti Vanilla Frosting chooses Red 40 instead.
Dairy and Frozen Foods
Consumers should be cautious when purchasing strawberry-flavored dairy products. For instance, TruMoo Strawberry Whole Milk contains Red 3, while other products like Edy’s Strawberry Ice Cream substitute with beet juice for coloring.
Fruit Products
Many maraschino cherries have transitioned to using Red 40, but some, like Kroger’s Extra Cherry canned fruit cocktail, still contain Red 3.
Beverages
Some nutritional shakes, such as Ensure Original Strawberry, include Red 3. In contrast, various drinks like Hawaiian Punch and Kool-Aid have switched to Red 40 for coloring.
Medications
Red 3 has also found its way into some gummy vitamins and medications, although many brands have opted for more natural colorings. Popular cough drops and syrups, such as Vicks and Robitussin, primarily use Red 40.
As the FDA takes steps to remove Red 3 from the market, it’s essential for consumers to remain informed about what they are putting into their bodies and choose products that align with their health priorities.
