Spartanburg, S.C. – The Spartanburg County Council is set to seek assistance from the state to support families whose homes were affected by Hurricane Helene.
The county’s community development department has requested permission from the council to apply for financial help through the South Carolina Housing Trust Fund specifically for disaster relief. Officials are particularly focused on aiding homeowners in Spartanburg County who earn at or below 80 percent of the area’s median income.
Kathy Rivers, the director of County Development, noted that many of these families lack insurance coverage for their damages, or they may have had their claims denied. The council voted in favor of this initiative without opposition.
Rivers expressed her enthusiasm about the possibility of receiving funding, stating, “I’m very, very happy. Let’s just hope that we will be funded and we will be able to assist approximately 60 families throughout the county, so we’re very excited about that.”
If the application is successful, eligible households could receive up to $30,000 in aid.
