Richmond, VA – Abigail Spanberger was sworn in as the 75th governor of Virginia on Saturday, marking a historic moment as the first woman to hold the state’s highest office in over two centuries. The inauguration took place at the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond, with Spanberger taking her oath on a Bible.
Spanberger, a Democrat, previously served as a U.S. Representative, leaving her seat to pursue the governorship. In the election, she defeated Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears to succeed outgoing Governor Glenn Youngkin.
In her inaugural address, Governor Spanberger acknowledged Virginia’s significant role in American history, reminding citizens that Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both hailed from the state. Jefferson also served as Virginia’s second governor.
She emphasized the importance of unity, quoting Patrick Henry’s famous words: “United we stand, divided we fall.” She urged Virginians to avoid division and work together for the betterment of the Commonwealth.
Spanberger also paid tribute to Doug Wilder, the first African-American governor of Virginia, who was present at the ceremony celebrating his 95th birthday.
The inauguration followed traditional customs, with many men in attendance wearing morning coats and women in dark suits. Spanberger’s husband, Adam Spanberger, wore a top hat. The governor herself wore white, which some observers interpreted as a nod to the women’s suffrage movement.
Moving forward, Governor Spanberger will be formally addressed as “Madam Governor.”
Virginia holds a unique place in American history. While no woman led the state during the colonial period or the early years of the Commonwealth, which began in 1776, Spanberger’s election reflects the evolving nature of leadership and representation in the state.
Spanberger’s win also signals a potential shift in Virginia’s political landscape. Republicans will be closely watching how her policies impact the state’s economy, education system, and overall quality of life. Many conservatives are concerned about the potential for increased government spending, more regulation, and a move away from traditional values.
As Governor Spanberger begins her term, she faces the challenge of governing a state with diverse viewpoints and priorities. It remains to be seen how she will navigate these challenges and whether she will be able to bridge the political divide.
