RICHMOND, Va. – Democrat Abigail Spanberger was inaugurated as Virginia’s new governor at the state Capitol on Saturday.
Spanberger, who succeeded outgoing Gov. Glenn Youngkin, stated she was aware of the historical importance of the moment.
During her campaign, Spanberger promised to protect Virginia’s economy. She also expressed concern about policies coming from Washington.
Two other Democrats also took office on Saturday. Ghazala F. Hashmi became the new lieutenant governor, and Jay Jones was sworn in as Virginia’s attorney general.
Following the ceremony, Governor Spanberger signed her first executive orders. One order rescinds a directive from the previous administration regarding state law enforcement and immigration enforcement.
Spanberger’s inauguration marks a historic moment as she becomes the first woman to hold the governor’s office in Virginia.
Prominent Democrats were in attendance at the ceremony, including New Jersey Gov.-Elect Mikie Sherrill and Maryland Gov. Wes Moore. Former Virginia Gov. Douglas Wilder also attended the inauguration.
State Democrats have voiced their commitment to collaborating with Spanberger on their agenda.
