A South Carolina lawmaker, RJ May III, is not speaking out after being re-elected while facing a federal investigation for allegedly holding child sex abuse material.
Just days after winning another term for South Carolina’s House District 88, his attorney agreed to extend the deadline for investigating the seizure of 35 electronic devices from May’s home in Lexington County, South Carolina. This seizure occurred about three months ago.
The initial deadline for filing judicial forfeiture against these items was scheduled for December 5, 2024, but it has now been pushed to March 5, 2024. This extension gives federal agents more time to analyze the devices, which include 19 flash drives, four hard drives, four cell phones, and other gadgets confiscated during a search on August 5, 2024.
The investigative details are not entirely clear, but sources have indicated that the investigation involves communications over a messaging app. Following the search, May reportedly advised members of his political faction to “attack the deep state” before he disabled his official Facebook page and limited contact with the media.
On October 22, May briefly responded to a write-in candidate’s claim that he had done “nothing” for his constituents, labeling the accusation as untrue. He won the election with 92.2% of the vote, though he faced little competition.
Since entering the South Carolina House of Representatives in 2020, May has remained in his role while also running a political consulting agency from his home. There has been no recent news about his location or that of his family since the investigation began, and May has not responded to requests from the media for comments.
