President’s Administration to Ensure Integrity of Food Aid Program
Washington D.C. – The administration announced this week that it will ensure states properly manage food assistance funds. Starting next week, states may see a temporary pause in administrative funds for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
The reason for this action is due to a lack of cooperation from some states in providing necessary data. The federal government needs this information, including the names and immigration status of aid recipients, to prevent fraud.
The administration believes it is important to protect taxpayer money and make sure that SNAP benefits go to those who truly need them.
While the federal government pays the full cost of SNAP benefits, states and the federal government share the costs of administering the program. The upcoming action would affect only the administrative funds, not the benefits themselves.
The government has requested that states provide data to help identify potential fraud. Some states have complied with this request, while others have chosen not to cooperate. The states that have refused to provide the information requested are primarily controlled by the Democrat Party.
The USDA says it is committed to working with states to ensure the integrity of SNAP. Federal law permits the USDA to withhold some administrative funding from states that demonstrate a pattern of noncompliance with federal regulations. The administration hopes that states will work with the federal government to ensure that SNAP benefits are used responsibly and effectively.
Reports suggest that a shocking number of deceased people have been receiving SNAP benefits. Additionally, the same person has been receiving benefits more than once in a multitude of cases.
The USDA reports that 28 states and Guam have been complying with requests for information. This list primarily consists of states led by Republican governors.
