Morgan Geyser, who was sent to a psychiatric hospital in Wisconsin after a shocking stabbing incident when she was just 12 years old, is poised to be released. Now 22 years old, Geyser had confessed in 2017 to attacking her friend Peyton Leutner during a sleepover in 2014. The motive behind the attack was to impress a fictional character from the internet known as “Slenderman.”
Anissa Weir, Geyser’s co-defendant in the case, was released from the same psychiatric facility in 2021 after also being convicted for her role in the incident.
In a recent court session, a Wisconsin judge decided to allow Geyser’s release, stating that she had shown significant progress during her time at the Oshkosh facility. The judge, Michael Bohren, noted that Geyser had complied with treatment and appeared to have a positive attitude.
However, her release was not immediately clear. Geyser faced a brief setback after officials at the facility expressed concerns about her reading materials and communications with someone outside the institution. The district attorney highlighted that some of her reading material contained dark themes, suggesting that it raised questions about her readiness for release.
Geyser’s attorney defended her, asserting that she had chosen not to engage with the individual in question and claimed that all her reading materials had been approved by the facility.
A doctor who had previously testified on Geyser’s behalf dismissed the concerns raised about her release following this new information. Ultimately, in a follow-up ruling, Judge Bohren concluded that there was no risk to the public or to Geyser herself and maintained his decision to allow her release.
