Man Sentenced for the Rape and Murder of 5-Year-Old Girl
In a tearful courtroom scene in Kansas, Mickel Cherry, 27, was sentenced to two life sentences for the rape and murder of five-year-old Zoey Felix. The tragic incident took place in a homeless camp in October 2023, where Cherry had been living with Zoey, her father, and her sister.
Judge Jessica Heinen of Shawnee County District Court announced the sentence last week, allowing the possibility of parole after 50 years, but with strict conditions that would require Cherry to be on parole for the rest of his life upon release.
Cherry had pleaded guilty to the charges, which included first-degree murder and the rape of a minor. According to court documents, he committed the crime while living with Zoey and her family. It was revealed that he smothered Zoey with a pillow after the assault.
When police arrived on October 2, 2023, Zoey was found with severe injuries and was rushed to the hospital, but sadly, it was too late to save her.
Cherry’s defense team suggested that both Cherry and Zoey were products of a flawed system, pointing out that Cherry had faced challenges within the foster care system in Texas. However, this argument did not resonate with Zoey’s sister, Katie Cain, who was visibly upset during the proceedings. She insisted that the real victim was her sister, stating, “In reality the only victim there truly was Zoey.”
Following the sentencing, Cain expressed her frustration with the defense’s claims, questioning how those arguments provided any hope for Cherry. She remarked, “We gave him a chance. I mean, after a while everyone really does show their true colors.”
Zoey’s father also spoke emotionally outside the courtroom, sharing his heartbreak over the loss. “To know that I won’t be able to see another birthday, another Christmas, or anything like that,” he lamented, highlighting the permanent impact this tragedy will have on his life.
The case has stirred deep emotions within the community, shedding light on the need for justice and the ongoing discussion around the welfare of vulnerable families.
