Federal Judge Halts Government Firings
SAN FRANCISCO – A federal judge in San Francisco has temporarily stopped the government from firing federal employees during the current government shutdown.
Judge Susan Illston issued a preliminary order that prevents the firings while a lawsuit is considered. The lawsuit challenges the government’s authority to make these job cuts.
The judge has questioned the reasoning behind the layoffs, suggesting they may be politically motivated. The government argues that the court doesn’t have the power to interfere in personnel matters.
This action comes as Democratic lawmakers insist that any agreement to end the shutdown must protect healthcare subsidies and reverse earlier changes to Medicaid. Meanwhile, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson has stated that he won’t negotiate until the government is reopened.
