Two West Virginia National Guard members were wounded in a shooting in Washington, D.C., Wednesday afternoon.
President Trump expressed his support for the wounded guardsmen, calling the shooter an “animal” and vowing justice. He affirmed his support, and that of his office, for the National Guard and law enforcement.
West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey stated he and his wife were heartbroken upon hearing the news, and initially misreported that the two guardsmen had died. FBI Director Kash Patel later clarified that they remain in critical condition.
Both of West Virginia’s Republican Senators also offered their prayers and support. West Virginia Democratic Party Chairman Mike Pushkin condemned the violence and honored the guardsmen’s service.
Other political figures, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, also commented on the shooting. Newsom decried the violence and voiced support for the service members and their families.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting appears to have been an ambush. The suspect was apprehended after other National Guard members intervened. Details about the suspect and the circumstances surrounding the shooting are still emerging.
