Shark Attack in South Australia: Man Injured Near Port Noarlunga
A man is in serious condition after being bitten by a shark off the Port Noarlunga jetty in South Australia. The incident occurred on Thursday, May 15, and is marked as the sixth shark attack in the region over the last two years.
Emergency services were alerted around 9:45 a.m. local time after reports of the attack while the man was swimming. Paramedics arrived quickly, treated him on-site, and then transported him to a hospital. His identity has not been released to the public.
Following the incident, authorities evacuated swimmers from the area, which is popular for activities like swimming, snorkeling, and diving.
This shark attack comes after a troubling trend in South Australia, which has seen four fatal shark attacks in the past two years. One of the most notable cases involved 28-year-old Lance Appleby, who was killed by a great white shark while surfing near Granites Beach last year; his body was never found.
In December 2023, a 15-year-old boy named Khai Cowley tragically lost his life in a shark attack at Ethel Beach. Another victim, 55-year-old Tod Gendle, was also killed by a great white shark near Streaky Bay, and 46-year-old teacher Simon Baccanello was presumed to have been attacked while surfing at Walkers Rock.
In addition to these fatalities, there have been other non-fatal attacks. In November 2023, 32-year-old Bridgette O’Shannessy was bitten on the head while swimming in Port Noarlunga. Earlier that same month, 64-year-old Pam Cook was also attacked while swimming in Beachport.
Authorities continue to monitor the area closely and advise caution to all watergoers.
