HOUSTON — The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles has announced that Yolanda Saldívar, the woman convicted of murdering Tejano music icon Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, will remain in prison. Saldívar, who is now 64 years old, was denied parole on her first opportunity since she shot the beloved singer in 1995.
Selena was a trailblazer in the music industry, recognized for her major contributions to Latin music and her potential to become a crossover star. Tragically, she was only 23 when her life was cut short. The family of Selena and her widower, Chris Pérez, expressed their appreciation for the board’s decision, highlighting that it reflects ongoing justice for Selena’s life, which has touched millions.
In explaining their decision, the parole board emphasized that Saldívar continues to be a danger to society. They noted the severe nature of her crime, which demonstrated a disregard for the well-being of others.
Serving her sentence in a prison in Gatesville, Texas, Saldívar will not be eligible for another parole review until 2030. This case captured widespread attention as she was Selena’s fan club president and managed her boutiques before being fired when financial discrepancies came to light.
Selena was shot in the back at a motel in Corpus Christi and was able to make it to the lobby before collapsing. Witnesses reported that she named Saldívar as her attacker. During an intense standoff with police, Saldívar expressed regret, stating that she did not intend to harm anyone and claimed she had bought the gun to take her own life.
Selena’s funeral drew an immense crowd, with over 50,000 fans paying their respects. The legal proceedings against Saldívar were moved to Houston due to media coverage surrounding the case, and she was ultimately convicted of first-degree murder in October 1995, receiving a life sentence.
While incarcerated, Saldívar has pursued education and has filed grievances regarding her treatment, indicating her complex experience in prison. In court documents, she noted that she has been kept in protective custody due to fears for her safety linked to the notoriety of her crime.
Known as “the Queen of Tejano,” Selena was a Grammy-winning artist whose music resonated with many, significantly impacting the Latin music landscape. Her songs not only celebrated cultural heritage but also laid the groundwork for future Latin artists. Following her untimely death, her legacy continues to shine, reminding fans everywhere of her vibrant spirit and talent.
