Selena Gomez took the opportunity to honor her co-stars, Steve Martin and Martin Short, by presenting them with their SAG Awards after they were unable to attend the 2025 ceremony. The event, which took place on February 23, saw the Hulu show Only Murders in the Building win the award for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series. Steve Martin Short also received a personal win, claiming the award for outstanding male actor in a comedy series, marking a significant milestone in his career.
Short, unfortunately, could not attend the event due to a COVID illness, and presenters Joey King and Jack Quaid accepted the award on his behalf. On March 12, Gomez shared a video as she surprised Martin and Short with their trophies, along with help from fellow co-star Michael Cyril Creighton and John Hoffman, the show’s co-creator and executive producer.
As she presented the awards, Gomez joyfully announced, “And the SAG Award goes to Steve Martin and Martin Short.” In a lighthearted moment, Short pretended to collapse under the weight of his award and jokingly gave a mock acceptance speech. “I would like to thank the Academy and everyone in the crew… Whose names I just don’t know,” he quipped, adding a humorous touch to the moment.
Martin also celebrated his first win at the SAG Awards, sharing his excitement for the honor. Earlier in the ceremony, Gomez had accepted the ensemble’s award without her co-stars, managing to convey their absence in a witty speech, where she humorously pointed out, “We never win. This is so weird! Marty and Steve aren’t here because, you know, they don’t really care.”
She also expressed her gratitude towards her co-stars, saying, “Thank you to Marty and Steve for — well they raised me. But I genuinely am just so grateful to everybody.”
In a heartfelt statement, Short shared his thoughts about receiving the award, stating, “The honor of being in Only Murders in the Building is the most spectacular compliment anyone could be given. The honor of being awarded by your peers is even greater. Thank you so, so much.”
The 2025 SAG Awards were a momentous event for the talented cast of Only Murders in the Building, showcasing their camaraderie and shared success in the entertainment industry.
