COLUMBIA, SC — State lawmakers in South Carolina had a significant election day recently.
All 46 seats in the South Carolina Senate and 124 seats in the House were up for election, along with the state’s seven congressional districts. One notable area was South Carolina Senate District 26, which covers Columbia and several surrounding communities. This district had been represented by Nikki Setlzer for many years before her retirement opened the door for new candidates.
In the primary election last June, Democrat Russell Ott defeated longtime Senator Dick Harpootlian while still serving the residents of House District 93. On election night, Ott secured victory against Republican Jason Guerry, getting 55% of the votes compared to Guerry’s 45%.
Meanwhile, Republican Congressman Joe Wilson is set to continue representing South Carolina’s 2nd Congressional District. Wilson expressed his joy over other Republican victories across the country and is looking forward to another two years in Washington, D.C.
Election night was an important moment for many lawmakers and residents across South Carolina.
