Senator Bernie Sanders recently expressed approval for some of President Donald Trump’s approaches to border security and fentanyl issues. In an interview with ABC’s Jonathan Karl, Sanders emphasized the need for stronger borders and a crackdown on fentanyl trafficking.
Sanders stated, “Look, nobody thinks illegal immigration is appropriate. We need to find a way to reform immigration that respects the law while addressing the needs of our economy.” He mentioned that it was important to have comprehensive immigration reform to tackle these concerns effectively.
This marks a notable shift from Sanders’ positions during his 2020 presidential campaign, where he advocated for major changes in immigration policy, such as limiting the powers of Customs and Border Protection and halting deportations pending a review process. He had also been an opponent of the border wall and relaxed regulations around sanctuary cities.
During the interview, Sanders highlighted the impact of undocumented workers in sectors like agriculture and meat packing, suggesting that losing such labor would be harmful to the country. He indicated that, while there are issues with undocumented immigration, there should be guest worker programs as part of a wider immigration strategy.
When questioned about the rise in illegal immigration since President Biden took office, Sanders conceded that improvements should be made, saying, “Should have done much better, no argument.”
In recent weeks, Sanders has been campaigning with Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, focusing on what he calls a “Fighting Oligarchy Tour.” Ocasio-Cortez addressed attendees at an event, emphasizing inclusivity regardless of past political affiliations or personal characteristics, calling on everyone to unite for the common good.
