Former football player Mark Sanchez was involved in an incident where he was stabbed, and now new details are coming out. The man who says he stabbed Sanchez, Perry Tole, said his “faith guided my hands to protect myself.”
Tole, who is 69 years old, was working his usual late-night job collecting used cooking oil in Indianapolis on October 4th around midnight. He had put his music career aside to take care of his sister-in-law after she was hurt in a robbery back in 2011. Tole, originally from Jamaica, recently became a U.S. citizen in September.
He explained that he was parking his truck when he saw Sanchez. Sanchez, who used to play quarterback for the New York Jets and now works as a sports commentator, was in town to announce the Colts-Raiders game.
Gregg Keesling, a friend of Tole’s, said that Tole is a peaceful man and believes “faith guided my hands to protect myself” during the incident.
According to Tole, Sanchez approached him about the truck’s location. Another person who saw what happened said that Sanchez threw Tole to the ground, and both men were recording each other with their phones.
Tole claims he was thrown against a wall and onto the ground. He used pepper spray and eventually a knife to defend himself.
Both men were taken to the hospital for treatment. Prosecutors have charged Sanchez with felony battery. If he is found guilty, he could face time in prison. He was initially arrested on some less serious charges.
Sanchez did not announce a game last week and will not announce one this week either.
