Sunrise, Florida — Sam Bennett took center stage at the Florida Panthers’ recent Stanley Cup parade, and before he could say a word, the enthusiastic crowd started chanting, “Eight more years! Eight more years!” They got their wish, as Bennett and the Panthers agreed on a new eight-year deal worth $64 million, translating to $8 million per season.
Panthers General Manager Bill Zito expressed his excitement, saying, “Sam is a special player who blends skill and toughness like few others. His contributions helped us secure two Stanley Cup titles, and he’s earned the franchise’s first Conn Smythe trophy. We’re glad he will continue with us.”
Bennett was named the playoff MVP, the first Florida player to receive the prestigious Conn Smythe Trophy. Historically, it’s rare for a Conn Smythe winner to join a different team for the next season, with the last instance occurring in 1997.
This signing is the first of several significant decisions the Panthers will make as free agency approaches. They still need to address the future of forward Brad Marchand and defenseman Aaron Ekblad.
General Manager Zito has made impressive moves, securing contracts for key players, including Aleksander Barkov, Matthew Tkachuk, and others through at least the 2029-30 season.
Bennett’s new contract marks a significant raise, moving up from his previous four-year deal, which paid him nearly $18 million. He had an outstanding playoff performance, being one of the few players to score 15 goals while accumulating significant penalty minutes.
Throughout the offseason, he hinted at his desire to stay in Florida, solidifying his commitment to the team. Last season was one of his best, as he recorded 25 goals and 26 assists, totaling a career-best 51 points.
