At least 95 people across more than a dozen states have reported illness linked to salmonella poisoning, as identified in a recent outbreak connected to recalled eggs, according to federal health officials.
Country Eggs LLC, based in Lucerne Valley, California, has issued a recall for their large, brown cage-free eggs branded as “sunshine yolks” and “omega-3 golden yolks.” The company has halted production of these eggs, which were sold under multiple labels, including Nagatoshi Produce, Mishuo, and Nijiya Markets. The affected cartons are marked with the code CA 7695 and sell-by dates ranging from July 1 to September 16.
This alarming outbreak has affected individuals in at least 14 states, with illnesses reported between January 7 and July 25. Among the reported cases, 18 people required hospitalization, and health authorities suggest that the total number of illnesses may be higher, as eggs may have been distributed in more locations.
An investigation led by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found that Country Eggs LLC was a common supplier for those who fell ill. These eggs were distributed to grocery stores and food service providers. Consumers are advised to check their refrigerators for the recalled products and either discard them or return them for a refund.
Salmonella poisoning symptoms include diarrhea, fever, severe vomiting, dehydration, and stomach cramps. Most individuals will recover within a week, but infections can be particularly severe in young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems, potentially leading to hospitalization.
This situation highlights the importance of vigilance when it comes to food safety and recalls. It serves as a reminder of the need for regulatory oversight to ensure that the food we consume is safe and that companies take prompt action when issues arise.
