The New Orleans Saints are expressing confidence in their quarterback, Tyler Shough, as they look ahead to the next season.
Shough, who was drafted in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, wasn’t initially the team’s starting quarterback. He took over from Spencer Rattler and managed a 5-4 record in his nine starts, becoming a contender for Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Head Coach Kellen Moore has been impressed with Shough’s performance and how he has managed the offense, especially during a crucial four-game winning streak.
Moore commented, “Tyler has been doing a great job. He’s improved a lot and has taken advantage of the opportunities he’s been given. We’re looking forward to having a full off-season to continue building on this.”
Shough’s path to becoming the Saints’ quarterback wasn’t typical. He played college football at Oregon, Texas Tech, and Louisville, before entering the NFL Draft.
Despite being 25 years old when drafted, his talent was evident, and the Saints saw him as a key player, especially after Derek Carr’s retirement created a need for a new quarterback.
Initially, Rattler was chosen as the starting quarterback during training camp. However, after a 1-7 start, the team decided to give Shough a chance.
The Saints were patient with Shough’s development, and when they felt he was ready, he stepped up.
General Manager Mickey Loomis emphasized the importance of not rushing Shough’s progress. “Sometimes being too patient can be a weakness, but I believe in being patient. We are excited about Tyler, but we must remember he hasn’t started a full season yet. We have high expectations for the next season, and that’s good, but we can’t skip any steps in his development.”
In his nine starts, Shough completed 67.6% of his passes, throwing for 2,384 yards, 10 touchdowns, and six interceptions in 327 attempts.
Loomis added, “He’s only in his second year and hasn’t even started a full season. We need to remember that as we move forward. We have building blocks here, and we need to take things one step at a time.”
The Saints are banking on Shough’s potential and are eager to see how he develops with a full off-season of preparation.
