LEXINGTON, SC (WOLO) — As Election Day approaches, local FBI agents are working to build trust among voters. They shared insights on how they protect the voting process.
Steven Jensen, the Special Agent in Charge of the Columbia Field Office in Lexington, emphasized the FBI’s dedicated efforts to safeguard elections for over a year. Their main focus is to keep the voting process fair and secure.
“Starting today, we have set up a 24/7 command post across the U.S., including our headquarters. Our team includes agents, analysts, and other law enforcement partners who are committed to our mission: protecting the American people and upholding the Constitution,” Jensen stated.
The FBI is ready to investigate any reports of voter fraud, civil rights violations, or campaign finance issues such as voter intimidation or interference. Jensen encourages voters to report any suspicious activities.
“We urge all voters to contact our Columbia Field Office at 803-551-4200, or to submit tips at 1-800-CALL-FBI,” he said.
However, not every issue reported may be a federal crime. Simple errors by poll workers or delays in results do not fall under this category. If anyone feels their voting rights are being threatened, local law enforcement can also be contacted.
“For any concerns about intimidation or suppression of votes, it’s important to inform the local authorities as they can respond swiftly,” Jensen explained.
Additionally, if you see an armed FBI agent at a polling location, know that they are there to vote only, as armed agents cannot intervene or participate in the election process during active voting or counting.
