Title: S.C. Representative Criticizes Research Lab After Monkey Escape Incident
Yamassee, SC (WOLO) — The situation with the escaped monkeys in the Lowcountry is still unfolding. Officials from Alpha-Genesis, the research facility where the 43 monkeys escaped, announced on Wednesday night that they have successfully recaptured 32 of the primates.
After checking their health, the officials reported that all the recovered monkeys appear to be in good condition. However, this incident is not the first time animals have escaped from this facility.
South Carolina Representative Nancy Mace has expressed her concerns regarding this situation. In a letter to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the National Institute of Health (NIH), Mace criticized Alpha-Genesis and demanded a thorough briefing on how the escape occurred.
In her statement, Mace highlighted the lab’s record, saying, “For years, Alpha-Genesis has received federal contracts and taxpayer money, yet they have consistently violated animal welfare laws, putting the public at risk. The NIH and USDA need to take action to ensure the safety of South Carolinians in light of this lab’s negligence.”
