House Republican Pushes for Stronger Action Against Russia
A leading Republican in the House of Representatives believes it’s time to get tougher on Russia to help Ukraine. Representative Mike Turner from Ohio, a former head of the House Intelligence Committee, says hitting Russia with stronger rules could make a big difference.
Congress is looking at new laws that would put more rules in place and add taxes on countries that buy energy from Russia. Those in favor say this is needed to hurt Russia’s ability to fund its war. Others worry it could cause problems with our friends and with the world’s economy.
Turner, who recently visited Ukraine with other members of Congress, said that Ukraine could win with the right help, and Russia’s actions could be stopped.
He said that the biggest problem is Russia’s ability to keep making military supplies. He also mentioned that Russia is getting help from countries like China, Iran, and North Korea, which is helping them continue their actions.
Turner believes it’s important to stop Russia’s ability to produce these supplies, not just now, but in the future. He says that Russia’s economy is what’s fueling its war.
Russia started a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The fight has been going on for a long time, and Russia has taken over some areas in eastern Ukraine and has controlled Crimea since 2014.
President Trump has spoken with leaders from both countries. He has said that Ukraine can win back its land with the help of Europe, especially NATO. He questioned why a real military power has not won the war in less than a week.
Turner noted that Russia is losing many soldiers every day. He said that Russia’s ability to keep selling oil and energy is what allows them to keep fighting.
China is the biggest buyer of Russia’s energy, followed by India and Turkey. Even though many countries in Europe have reduced how much energy they buy from Russia, they still depend on them for some supplies.
The United States has already put many rules in place against Russia. Senators are working on laws that would allow the President to add even more rules and taxes on countries that buy energy from Russia.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has said he supports taking action against Russia. He believes there is a lot of support in Congress for this, and they are willing to work with the White House and the Senate to make it happen.
When asked if Congress needed the President’s approval to move forward, Turner said he doesn’t believe the President is against putting more rules in place.
