A proposal for peace in Ukraine, reportedly backed by the U.S., is causing disagreement among lawmakers. Some senators claim Secretary of State Marco Rubio told them the plan favors Russia too much.
These lawmakers, speaking at a security conference, suggest the plan, which calls for Ukraine to give up territory, seems more like a Russian “wish list” than a serious attempt at negotiation. They worry it rewards Russia’s aggression and could encourage other countries to threaten their neighbors.
The State Department denies these claims. Secretary Rubio stated that the peace proposal was authored by the U.S. and is offered as a strong framework for ongoing negotiations, and it incorporates input from both Russia and Ukraine.
Some within the administration say the plan is a starting point for talks aimed at achieving lasting peace. Russian President Putin has welcomed the proposal, while Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has pledged to work calmly with Washington.
The disagreement comes as tensions remain high in Eastern Europe. The situation underscores the challenges in finding a solution that protects both Ukrainian sovereignty and promotes regional stability.
