Romo Weighs In on Controversial Calls During Broncos-Eagles Game
Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, now a commentator, shared his thoughts on some of the officiating calls during Sunday’s game between the Denver Broncos and the Philadelphia Eagles. Romo, known for his insightful analysis, pointed out a couple of plays that he believed were incorrectly officiated.
During the game, with about 8 minutes and 41 seconds left on the clock, Broncos quarterback Bo Nix connected with tight end Evan Engram, but the play was cut short of a first down. A flag was immediately thrown, and Engram was penalized for offensive pass interference.
Romo, who was providing commentary for the game, quickly voiced his disagreement with the call. He suggested that the contact between the players seemed accidental, arising from a hitch route, rather than intentional interference. Romo stated that if he were in charge, he would have reversed the penalty. However, he also humorously acknowledged that Eagles fans would likely have a different opinion, viewing the call as justified.
Despite the penalty, the Broncos managed to push forward and score a touchdown, successfully converting the 2-point attempt to take the lead.
Later in the game, with only 3 minutes and 37 seconds remaining, Nix faced pressure from the Eagles’ defense and threw the ball away in the direction of tight end Adam Trautman. Initially, it appeared the play would not warrant a penalty for intentional grounding. However, the officials threw a flag, signaling intentional grounding.
This decision led to a discussion among Romo, fellow commentator Jim Nantz, and officiating analyst Gene Steratore. Following a replay review, the officials overturned their initial call, changing it to an incomplete pass.
Romo expressed surprise at the officials’ lack of communication, saying, “Just don’t tell us?” He downplayed the magnitude of the moment, while also acknowledging the significance of the decision.
These two officiating decisions seemed to be the primary focus of Romo’s commentary. Furthermore, many NFL fans directed their attention to a play near the end of the game. During a pass attempt to Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert, it appeared that Goedert was interfered with. Despite the apparent interference, no flag was thrown, and the Broncos ultimately secured the win.
The game was filled with drama and excitement, leaving fans and commentators alike debating the impact of the officiating on the final outcome. As is common in the NFL, certain calls and non-calls were subject to scrutiny. These plays will likely be discussed and analyzed in the days and weeks to come.
