Don Lemon, a journalist, was arrested in Los Angeles on January 29th. This happened shortly after he went to a party celebrating the Grammy Awards.
Earlier, on January 18th, Don Lemon was also arrested for being at a protest in a church in St. Paul, Minnesota. At this protest, he and others were against how immigration is enforced. They chanted “ICE out” during a church service.
The FBI has said that Don Lemon was arrested in Beverly Hills based on a federal warrant.
Before the arrest, Don Lemon was seen with famous music artists like Busta Rhymes at a pre-Grammy party. Busta Rhymes praised Don Lemon for “doing his job” and said that Don Lemon needed to be protected.
Later, Don Lemon was arrested and charged under a law called the FACE Act. This law protects people’s right to attend services at places of worship. Don Lemon’s lawyer said that he was only at the church as a journalist, reporting on the protest.
His lawyer also said that Don Lemon has been a journalist for 30 years. He added that the First Amendment protects journalists who are reporting the truth and holding people in power responsible.
Pam Bondi, who used to work for President Trump, said that everyone has the right to worship safely. She also warned that if anyone violates this right, they will be held accountable.
According to news reports, officials wanted to charge eight people, including Don Lemon, for the protest. But a judge only approved charges against three people, saying there wasn’t enough evidence against Don Lemon and others.
Don Lemon has said that he was at the church to report on the protest and talk to the people involved, which he says is part of his job as a journalist.
