Health Secretary Praises Meal Delivery Program for Seniors
In Washington, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently applauded a meal delivery service aimed at helping seniors and those enrolled in Medicaid and Medicare. The company, called Mom’s Meals, provides meals for around $7 each, featuring options like chicken bacon ranch pasta and French toast sticks.
During a visit to the company’s facility in Oklahoma, Kennedy highlighted the importance of delivering healthy meals to vulnerable populations. He expressed gratitude for the meals, stating they are sent directly to the homes of those who are sick or elderly and are made without certain additives.
However, some experts have raised concerns about the nutritional quality of these meals. A review revealed that many of the meal options contain chemical additives and high levels of sodium, sugar, or unhealthy fats—elements often criticized for contributing to poor health.
Marion Nestle, a nutrition expert from New York University, noted that these meals could be made with fresh ingredients instead of ultra-processed components. She emphasized that while it’s possible to create healthier meals, they often come at a higher cost.
Despite some criticisms, a spokesperson from Mom’s Meals claimed their products lack certain harmful additives common in many industrially produced foods. Yet, they did not specifically address the presence of other undesirable substances.
The meals offered by Mom’s Meals are covered under Medicaid for certain enrollees, including seniors and individuals recovering from hospitalization. The precise federal spending on these programs remains unclear, although past investigations have uncovered that some states have spent significant amounts on meals that may not be as healthy as claimed.
The term “ultraprocessed” can be ambiguous, but generally refers to foods that contain industrial ingredients and additives not typically found in a standard home kitchen. Kennedy has been vocal about the need for healthier diets in the U.S. and has encouraged citizens to shift towards whole foods instead of processed options.
He believes that improving the nation’s dietary habits is essential for fostering overall health and freedom. By advocating for better food choices, Kennedy appeals to a diverse group of supporters, including those in suburban communities and loyalists to former President Trump.
