Rep. Mike Carey, a Republican from Ohio, is in the running to take over the U.S. Senate seat that will be vacated by Vice President-elect JD Vance upon his formal resignation. Carey, who has previously worked as a coal lobbyist and is a veteran, has successfully secured a seat in Ohio’s 15th congressional district three times since 2021.
In a recent interview, Carey emphasized the importance of having someone with experience ready to support the new administration’s agenda from the moment they assume office. He noted that Vance’s resignation has not yet occurred, but the anticipation is building for who Governor Mike DeWine will appoint to the Senate.
Carey, who has received several endorsements from former President Trump, believes it’s crucial for Ohio to have a senator who will prioritize Trump’s agenda to ensure the president’s success. “I think the American people want the president to be successful,” he stated, expressing his eagerness to contribute to the Senate’s efforts.
He pointed out that a new senator should be ready to begin work immediately, asserting that it’s vital to avoid having someone who needs time to learn the ropes. With his background on the House Ways and Means Committee, Carey feels confident that his experience will translate well to a Senate role.
Carey also highlighted the diverse nature of Ohio and emphasized the need for someone representing the state who understands this uniqueness. He described Ohio as a “microcosm” of the nation, particularly mentioning its role as a test market for new products in the food industry, demonstrating the state’s varied demographics and interests.
In the recent elections, Carey outperformed Republican Sen.-elect Bernie Moreno in his district by over 18,000 votes. Moreno recently flipped a crucial Senate seat in Ohio, winning against incumbent Democrat Sen. Sherrod Brown. Meanwhile, Carey claimed victory in the House with over 56% of the votes.
Carey pointed out his accomplishments in Congress, mentioning he has successfully brought over $60 million back to his district within three years of being in office. “I’m not a career politician…I grew up in Ohio and deeply understand what the state needs,” he emphasized, expressing his commitment to serving the people of Ohio if given the chance in the Senate.
Governor DeWine is tasked with selecting a replacement for Vance who can effectively fend off Democrats in the 2026 special election for the remaining Senate term. A host of other contenders are also in the mix, including Reps. Jim Jordan, David Joyce, and Warren Davidson, alongside notable figures such as former Ohio Republican Chair Jane Timken, two-term Secretary of State Frank LaRose, and others.
Carey expressed admiration for Governor DeWine’s political experience and his dedication to Ohio. “The governor understands the state well and wants someone who truly loves Ohio in office,” he stated, asserting that he embodies that commitment and dedication.
