Putin to Address Global Journalists at Economic Forum
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia — President Vladimir Putin is set to engage with international journalists on Wednesday at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. This forum will provide an opportunity for him to discuss key global issues, including the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, specifically the conflict between Israel and Iran.
Putin has previously indicated a willingness to mediate in this conflict, having expressed this during a recent call with former U.S. President Donald Trump. Russia has long maintained a complicated balance in the Middle East, fostering positive ties with Israel while simultaneously strengthening its relationship with Iran. Many see this as an opportunity for Russia to play a significant role in bringing about a resolution to the ongoing strife.
Observers will be keen to hear Putin’s insights on the three-year conflict in Ukraine, where Russia’s military actions have escalated. His recent refusal of Trump’s proposed ceasefire—conditioned on Ukraine halting its mobilization and Western countries freezing arms supplies—has raised questions about Russia’s future strategy.
Historically, this annual forum has served as a platform for Putin to showcase Russia’s economic progress and to attract foreign investment. However, following the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, many Western business leaders have opted out of attending, leaving the event dominated by representatives from Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
Additionally, Putin is scheduled to meet with various world leaders, including Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, who now heads the New Development Bank associated with the BRICS countries—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Discussions are also planned with officials from China, South Africa, Bahrain, and leaders from OPEC.
On Friday, Putin will participate in a panel discussion at the forum, a venue he often uses to outline his policy directions and economic goals.
