U.S. Efforts to Broker Ukraine Peace Face Hurdles
Washington is working hard to find a way to end the fighting in Ukraine, but disagreements remain, especially on land and security issues.
President Trump has made it a priority to stop the war, which started nearly four years ago. His team, led by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, is talking with both Russia and Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said that talks with the U.S. envoys were “necessary” and “useful” but that some of the U.S. ideas are not acceptable to Russia. He didn’t say exactly what the disagreements were.
Witkoff and Kushner are scheduled to meet with Ukraine’s lead negotiator, Rustem Umerov, in Miami to continue discussions.
Trump said that Witkoff and Kushner believe Putin wants to make a deal. However, European leaders think Putin may not be serious about peace.
Fighting continues in Ukraine, with both sides claiming attacks on civilian areas.
