A Russian court has sentenced Sergei Udaltsov, a political activist, to six years in prison. Udaltsov, known for his past opposition to the government, was found guilty of justifying terrorism.
The charges against Udaltsov reportedly stem from an online article he wrote in support of a group accused of terrorist activities. Udaltsov maintains his innocence, calling the verdict a “shameful” fabrication and has reportedly begun a hunger strike.
Udaltsov gained prominence during protests in 2011-2012. He has been previously imprisoned for organizing demonstrations.
This sentencing comes amid increased scrutiny of dissent within Russia, particularly following the conflict in Ukraine.
