Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a temporary ceasefire for Easter amid the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. According to the Kremlin, this truce will take effect from 6:00 PM to midnight between Sunday and Monday.
The war, which has lasted over three years, has tragically resulted in the loss of tens of thousands of lives on both sides. Putin stated in a video released by the Russian Foreign Ministry that the ceasefire is guided by humanitarian concerns. He urged all military actions to be halted during this period.
In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed skepticism about the sincerity of the ceasefire. Shortly after Putin’s announcement, air raid alerts were reported throughout Ukraine. Zelenskyy questioned the effectiveness of the truce, noting that drone attacks were still occurring, revealing what he sees as a lack of regard for human life from the Kremlin.
Ukrainian forces reported ongoing military engagements, especially around the Kursk region, while Russian officials claimed to have pushed back Ukrainian troops from key areas. Zelenskyy has emphasized that any meaningful ceasefire would need to extend beyond the proposed hours to build trust, suggesting that 30 days might provide a better opportunity for genuine peace efforts.
Simultaneously, discussions are underway about an upcoming minerals deal between the United States and Ukraine, as former President Donald Trump indicated that the U.S. might refrain from peace initiatives if Russia does not show willingness to negotiate genuinely.
As the situation evolves, both sides remain vigilant, and the coming days will be crucial in determining the likelihood of lasting peace in the region. The Ukrainian Defense Forces are prepared to respond rationally to any aggression, signaling their readiness to protect their territory against further attacks.
