One person has died and two others were hurt in a tragic accident involving Purdue University’s mascot train on an Indiana highway.
On April 24, the Boilermaker Special was traveling on U.S. 52 near Wyandotte Road in southeastern Tippecanoe County when it crashed into a car. The driver of that vehicle lost their life, while two passengers, ages 20 and 22, suffered injuries that were not life-threatening and were taken to a local hospital.
Purdue University confirmed the involvement of its mascot in a serious multi-vehicle accident. A university spokesperson expressed condolences, stating, “Our thoughts are with all those impacted by the incident.” Thankfully, the two students aboard the mascot vehicle were treated and later released from the hospital.
According to the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO), the accident was likely caused by a tire malfunction that made the train cross into the opposite lane, colliding with a passenger car. The Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating to determine if there were any other mechanical problems related to the accident.
In this effort, they are receiving assistance from the Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Division. The Boilermaker Special, known for its design resembling a Victorian-era steam locomotive, usually travels to support Purdue University’s football team at away games.
