Key Points to Know About the Kohberger Case
During a recent court hearing, lead prosecutor Bill Thompson revealed important details about Bryan Kohberger, who confessed to killing four University of Idaho students on November 13, 2022.
-
Limited Intent: Thompson indicated that Kohberger did not plan to kill all four victims but may have intended to target one or two individuals.
-
Sequence of Events: Kohberger first attacked Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves. However, Goncalves had moved out and was only visiting that weekend. Following this, Xana Kernodle was also attacked after encountering Kohberger.
-
Emotional Testimony: Thompson became emotional while discussing the case, stating, “Mr. Kohberger entered the residence at 1122 King Road with the intent to kill.” He emphasized that while Kohberger did not plan all the murders, his actions were deliberate and premeditated.
-
The Murders: Kohberger entered the home through a second-floor sliding door, immediately going to the third floor where Mogen and Goncalves were asleep. It is believed these two were his initial targets, as he bypassed other available bedrooms on the second floor.
-
Victims’ Final Moments: Thompson noted that Kernodle was awake during the initial attacks and had even ordered food beforehand. When Kohberger encountered her, he attacked and then moved on to her boyfriend, Ethan Chapin, who was also in the bedroom.
-
No Evidence of Assault: The prosecutor highlighted that all victims suffered multiple stab wounds, but there was no indication of sexual assault.
-
Surviving Roommate’s Experience: One of the surviving roommates saw Kohberger leave the house with a bag and later alerted another roommate. They were unaware of the tragedy that had occurred upstairs.
-
Kohberger’s Fate: Currently, Kohberger has made a plea deal with prosecutors, which will lead to a life sentence without the possibility of parole. His sentencing is set for July 23.
This case continues to unfold, and the focus remains on the tragic loss of lives and the impact on the community.
