In Minneapolis, Minnesota, a sad event happened on January 24th. Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse who worked in the ICU, was shot and killed.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said that federal officers were trying to arrest someone for a violent crime. They claim Alex approached them with a gun and resisted when they tried to take it from him.
However, some people who saw what happened say things were different. They say Alex was holding a phone, not a gun.
Alex’s parents, Michael and Susan, remember him as a kind person. They had talked to him just a couple of days before he died about fixing his garage door. Alex had even given the repairman, who was Latino, a generous tip because of everything happening in Minneapolis.
His parents knew Alex planned to protest and had told him to be careful and not do anything foolish.
After Alex’s death, his family released a statement calling him a “kindhearted soul” and saying that the DHS’s version of events was a lie. They are heartbroken and angry about what happened.
Witnesses at the scene say Alex was filming with his phone and helping people who were being threatened by federal agents. One woman said that Alex was trying to help someone up when agents shot him while he was on the ground.
A doctor who was there tried to help Alex, but he was in very bad condition. The doctor said that the agents seemed to be counting Alex’s bullet wounds instead of checking for a pulse or giving him CPR. The doctor started CPR until paramedics arrived. It was later discovered Alex had been shot at least 10 times.
