Spencer Pratt, known for his role on “The Hills,” says many in Hollywood quietly agree with his criticisms of Los Angeles leaders. However, they’re afraid to speak out.
Pratt, now running for mayor of Los Angeles, says these conversations usually happen away from the cameras, often in restaurants. He says famous people will ask him about his ideas and thank him, but they don’t want their names attached to his cause.
“I know actual A-list stars support what I do,” Pratt said. “But these people know if they do that publicly, they risk losing their careers that some of them have been working for 30 years to have.”
Pratt understands the risk and doesn’t blame people for staying quiet. He compares it to firefighters who don’t speak up about the truth because they fear being punished.
Pratt says the fear is not just in Hollywood, but across Los Angeles. People see what’s happening, but they don’t want to talk about it.
Pratt admits he used to be silent too. He says losing his home in a wildfire in January 2025 changed things for him. His parents also lost their home in the fires.
Pratt says the experience made him realize he couldn’t ignore the problems anymore.
He believes his decision to speak out and run for mayor happened for a reason. He also released his memoir, “The Guy You Loved to Hate.”
Pratt says he felt he had to run for mayor when he saw no one else was stepping up to challenge Mayor Karen Bass.
He decided to directly challenge the city’s leadership.
Pratt says his memoir explains his public image and the strategy behind it.
“The memoir is called ‘The Guy You Love to Hate’ because my goal was always to be fun and entertaining,” Pratt said.
He says he was told to be like a young Simon Cowell, but he admits he sometimes went too far.
Pratt says there was always a purpose behind his actions, which was to make money.
He says people often mistake the character he played on TV for who he really is.
Looking back, Pratt says he doesn’t regret anything.
“I don’t regret any chapters of my life because they are hard experiences that got me here to go up against someone like Karen Bass and the system of Los Angeles politics,” he said.
He sees his past failures as training for the challenges he faces now.
Spencer Pratt’s memoir, “The Guy You Loved to Hate,” is available now.
