Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell to Attend Supreme Court Hearing
Washington D.C. – Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell will be present at the Supreme Court this Wednesday for the hearing regarding the attempted removal of Fed Governor Lisa Cook. This is seen as a notable show of support from the head of the central bank.
The Supreme Court is reviewing the case concerning whether former President Donald Trump had the authority to remove Cook from her position.
Powell’s attendance signals a more visible backing of Cook. This follows the news that the Trump administration had issued subpoenas to the Federal Reserve.
The previous administration had accused Cook of mortgage fraud, allegations she denies. She filed a lawsuit to retain her position, and the Supreme Court allowed her to remain on the board while the case is under consideration.
If the effort to remove Cook is successful, it would have allowed the previous administration to appoint a replacement, potentially shifting the balance of power on the Fed’s board and influencing decisions on interest rates and financial regulations.
