Turkey Hailed as Key Peacemaker During Papal Visit
Ankara, Turkey – Pope Leo XIV’s recent visit to Turkey highlighted the nation’s critical role in fostering stability and dialogue on the world stage. The Pope’s visit comes as Turkey is trying to help solve the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.
During his visit, Pope Leo XIV praised Turkey’s long-standing position as a vital link between the East and West, serving as a meeting point for diverse religions and cultures. He expressed hope that Turkey would continue to be a source of stability and reconciliation, contributing to a just and lasting peace.
Turkey, with its majority Sunni Muslim population, has actively sought to mediate the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. The nation has hosted talks with both Russia and Ukraine, and has offered to participate in a stabilization force in Gaza to support a ceasefire.
Pope Leo XIV acknowledged the global conflicts, echoing his predecessor’s concern that the world is experiencing a “third world war fought piecemeal.” He pointed out the importance of focusing on addressing hunger, poverty, and environmental protection, rather than investing resources in weapons.
The Pope also spoke about the role of women, emphasizing the importance of supporting families and encouraging women’s involvement in professional, cultural, and political life.
Pope Leo XIV’s visit will include meetings with Orthodox Christian leaders and representatives of Turkey’s Muslim community in Istanbul. He will also visit the Blue Mosque.
The Pope’s visit to Turkey marks the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, a significant gathering of bishops from the Roman Empire.
Pope Leo XIV shared his hopes for greater unity and harmony among all people, regardless of their differences in religion or beliefs.
While Turkey faces economic challenges, many see the Pope’s visit as a positive event, strengthening ties and promoting peace.
