A Virginia man, Brian Cole Jr., has been arrested and charged in connection with pipe bombs found outside the Republican and Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington D.C. on January 5, 2021.
According to court documents, Cole confessed to planting the devices during questioning. Sources familiar with the investigation say Cole expressed support for former President Donald Trump and believed claims about the 2020 election being stolen.
The bombs were discovered the day before the Capitol riot, a day of unrest that some feel was fueled by concerns about election integrity. While no one was hurt by the bombs, officials have stated they were capable of causing serious harm.
Cole is currently being held in jail and is scheduled for a detention hearing later this month. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not yet released any information regarding a possible motive.
