Phoenix Suns Consider Buyout for Bradley Beal
The Phoenix Suns are exploring the possibility of a contract buyout with their guard, Bradley Beal, as they strategize how to manage their salary cap heading into the new NBA season. The discussions come as part of the Suns’ effort to streamline their roster and potentially navigate financial pressures.
Beal, who has two years remaining on his current contract worth a total of $110 million, could become a free agent if the buyout is finalized. The official signing period for players begins on July 6, when teams can complete agreements with free agents.
The three-time All-Star signed a substantial five-year deal valued at $251 million with the Washington Wizards, which originally included a no-trade clause. However, if the Suns buyout his contract, that clause would no longer be in effect, giving Beal the opportunity to join another team without being limited by his current agreement.
While the Suns have a policy of not discussing individual player contracts, General Manager Brian Gregory has previously avoided questions regarding the team’s plans for players like Kevin Durant. This came during a recent press conference introducing new head coach Jordan Ott. The Suns made a significant move just before the draft, trading Durant to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the 10th overall pick in the 2025 draft, and five second-round picks.
Currently, the Suns’ salary cap situation shows a hit of $3.8 million, mainly from the salaries of players Nassir Little and E.J. Liddell. However, with a maximum cap amount of $23.2 million, the team is looking to reduce overall expenses, especially as they are slightly over the second tax apron by more than $10 million.
One option under consideration is a buyout for Beal that would allow the Suns to spread his remaining salary over several years. For instance, if they were to negotiate a buyout totaling $90 million, it could result in an annual cap hit of $18 million for five years. This strategy would provide them with more flexibility as they aim to come under financial limits for the upcoming seasons.
If Beal does proceed with a buyout, he would have the freedom to sign with any team. However, he would need to find a suitable landing spot that would accept him at a reduced contract amount, ensuring he does not lose significant money during the process.
Beal has shown he can be a valuable player, averaging 17.6 points per game with a shooting percentage of 50.5% during his two seasons with the Suns. Despite these impressive numbers, he has struggled with injuries, having played only 53 games in each of those two seasons. His last full season with notable durability was the 2020-21 season when he participated in 60 games, making an impressive All-Star appearance.
The trade to bring Beal to Phoenix included sending Chris Paul to the Wizards and was intended to create a powerful trio alongside Devin Booker and Kevin Durant. The hope was that this combination would elevate the team’s chances of contending for an NBA championship. Unfortunately, the team did not meet the high expectations, finishing with a record of 45-33 when the three played together.
As the Suns continue to analyze their roster and finances, the potential buyout of Bradley Beal remains a significant talking point within the organization. The outcome of these discussions could lay the foundation for the team’s future, whether it means reshaping their star lineup or allowing one of their key players to pursue opportunities elsewhere.
The NBA offseason is often filled with moves and surprises, and the Suns are in a crucial period that could redefine their competitive standing. As July approaches and the official signing period nears, the basketball community will be watching closely to see how the Suns decide to move forward.
