Weather Disrupts PGA Championship in Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The PGA Championship faced another weather-related delay on Saturday morning, pushing tee times back by more than three hours. Players took to both the first and 10th tees at Quail Hollow to continue the tournament.
Currently, Jhonattan Vegas holds a two-shot lead, with Scottie Scheffler trailing by three strokes.
The PGA of America announced that the third round would feature threesomes starting from both the first and tenth tees. It was a challenging morning, with Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele preparing for their scheduled 8:25 a.m. tee time when the weather took a turn.
Play was halted at 7:30 a.m. as storms moved in but resumed briefly at 7:47 a.m. Just moments before their tee time, the horn sounded once again, and the players were forced to return indoors. This unexpected turn of events meant that McIlroy and Schauffele, initially set to play in the second-to-last group, would now start at 1:30 p.m. instead of 12:30 p.m.
In a noteworthy moment, McIlroy, the reigning Masters champion and a recent career Grand Slam winner, faced a unique challenge this week. He is competing with a backup driver after his regular one was ruled nonconforming by the USGA. Regular driver testing is standard at major tournaments, raising questions about compliance and equipment.
As play resumes, Vegas will lead the final group alongside Matthieu Pavon and Matt Fitzpatrick, a former U.S. Open champion. Scheffler will continue to play with Max Homa and welcomed Si Woo Kim, a well-liked partner among the group.
Looking ahead, the forecast for Saturday afternoon and Sunday shows promise for more favorable playing conditions.
