Los Angeles, California – Dr. Mark Chavez received his sentence Tuesday for his role in providing ketamine to actor Matthew Perry before his death. Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett ordered Chavez to eight months of home confinement, followed by three years of supervised release.
Chavez admitted to acquiring ketamine and giving it to Dr. Salvador Plasencia, who has already been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for selling the drug to Perry.
Addressing the court, Chavez expressed his condolences to the Perry family, acknowledging their grief. His lawyers pointed out that Chavez cooperated with investigators and voluntarily gave up his medical license, showing he took responsibility for his actions.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about drug abuse and the responsibilities of medical professionals. While ketamine is sometimes used to treat depression, its misuse can have tragic consequences. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of ethical medical practices and the dangers of drug diversion.
Perry, best known for his role on the television show “Friends,” struggled with addiction for many years. His death was ruled to be primarily caused by ketamine.
Chavez is the second person sentenced in connection with Perry’s death. Three other individuals who pleaded guilty will be sentenced in the coming months.
