The Pentagon is set to deploy approximately 1,500 active-duty soldiers to the border with Mexico. This move is intended to support the immigration policies laid out by President Donald Trump. With this new deployment, the total number of troops stationed at the border will reach about 3,600.
The troops being sent are from an aviation logistics brigade based in Fort Liberty, North Carolina. A U.S. official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, indicated that the order was part of ongoing efforts to implement Trump’s executive orders issued shortly after he took office on January 20.
Currently, a first wave of 1,600 active-duty soldiers is already on-site at the border. In addition, approximately 500 more soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division are anticipated to arrive in the coming days.
Furthermore, around 500 Marines have been dispatched to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where they will assist in managing some of the detained migrants. Many Marines have already arrived at the facility.
The troops heading to the border will aid in installing barbed wire barriers, as well as providing necessary transportation, intelligence, and logistical support to the Border Patrol. The logistics brigade is expected to help sustain the deployed forces effectively.
Those stationed in Guantanamo will be working to prepare the facility for an expected increase in migrants, alongside performing various supportive tasks.
