Paul Mario Day, Original Iron Maiden Frontman, Passes Away at 69
Paul Mario Day, the original lead singer of the iconic British heavy metal band Iron Maiden, has sadly passed away at the age of 69. The band announced his death on social media, expressing their sorrow and extending condolences to his family and friends.
The tribute shared by Iron Maiden stated, “We are deeply saddened that Paul Mario Day, Iron Maiden’s first-ever vocalist back in 1975, has passed away. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to Paul’s family and friends. Paul was a lovely person and good mate. Rest in peace, Paul.”
While the exact cause of his death has not been revealed, the news has hit fans hard, with many sharing their memories and condolences online. One fan wrote, “Rock in Power,” while another remarked, “He’s now rockin’ with the best of them up in heaven.”
Day joined Iron Maiden as their first frontman in December 1975 when he was just 19 years old. He remained with the band until 1976, after which he formed another band called More. They too expressed their sadness over his passing, noting his significant influence in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM).
Describing Day’s contribution to rock music, they said, “He was a huge part of the NWOBHM from his time in an early version of Iron Maiden and of course his fantastic performance on the Warhead album.”
Day played memorable shows, including the legendary 1981 Monsters of Rock concert alongside major acts like AC/DC and Whitesnake. He later joined the band Wildfire and also performed with a reformed Sweet before moving to Australia, where he continued to be active in the music scene until his death.
He is survived by his wife, Cecily. This news comes just a year after the passing of another former Iron Maiden singer, Paul Di’Anno, who died at 66. The losses of these two iconic figures serve as a reminder of the rich history and impact they made on the heavy metal world.
