A couple in Missouri faces serious charges of child abuse after allegedly performing a circumcision on a child at their home without any medical training. Tyler Wade Gibson has been charged with child abuse and carrying out unauthorized surgery, while his wife, Bailey Alexus Gibson, is also facing similar charges.
According to court documents, the incident reportedly occurred on November 27, where Tyler is accused of “knowingly” performing a circumcision on a child under 18, resulting in physical injury. It’s noted that he is not a licensed physician and had no authority to perform such a medical procedure. The charges against him are classified as felonies.
On November 28, authorities were alerted by someone at Columbia University Hospital regarding the child’s condition, which had arisen from the circumcision done at home. The complaint indicates that the circumcision did not proceed as expected, leading to the child being taken first to Lake Regional Hospital and then transferred to Columbia University Hospital for further treatment.
In the aftermath of the procedure, officers visited Tyler’s home to discuss the matter. During questioning, Tyler reportedly admitted to performing the circumcision but acknowledged that he lacked the necessary medical background. He mentioned that he had done some research prior to the surgery and had even prayed for a blessing.
Tyler stated he had attempted to manage the situation by using pads to catch blood and sterilizing the blade used; however, he expressed that he was caught off guard by the amount of bleeding that occurred, which led them to seek medical help. He indicated that they left the hospital after a few hours due to frustration with waiting.
Tyler also informed police that he utilized a “utility tool” for the circumcision and directed them to where the blade could be found in the home, although authorities were unable to recover it during their search. Reports suggest that Bailey, the child’s mother, also admitted to assisting with the procedure.
Tyler had a court appearance on December 3, while Bailey is set to appear in court on January 28.
