Agents from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) recently carried out a significant operation in Kentucky, resulting in the arrest of 81 individuals suspected of being in the country illegally. This initiative, known as “Operation Take Back America,” is part of a broader effort under President Donald Trump’s administration to strengthen immigration enforcement.
In a statement released on Tuesday, ICE revealed that out of those arrested, 25 individuals face criminal charges, including serious offenses such as sexual misconduct with minors, drug trafficking, and domestic violence. Notably, one individual had been deported multiple times—an alarming fact that brings to light the failures of current immigration controls.
Those without criminal charges will remain in ICE custody as they await the outcomes of their immigration cases. The arrests involved people from various countries including Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Cuba, India, and Palau, all of whom were found to be living in the U.S. illegally.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that this operation brings together multiple federal agencies in Kentucky, aimed at tackling the issue of illegal immigration and disrupting cartels and other transnational crime organizations. DHS emphasized that Operation Take Back America is about protecting American communities from violent crime.
Michael Bennett, the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky, praised the efforts of the law enforcement agencies involved. He mentioned that this operation not only benefits Kentucky but also has a positive impact on the entire nation. Bennett expressed gratitude to the officers and support staff for their relentless work in ensuring community safety through strict enforcement of immigration laws.
Among those arrested was a Mexican national named Humberto Avila-Duran, who had a history of illegal re-entries into the country and was apprehended while in possession of a firearm. Another suspect, Edi Diaz-Lopez, was charged with serious drug offenses, highlighting the dangers posed by individuals who violate immigration laws.
In conclusion, leaders at ICE reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining public safety and national security by removing individuals who pose a threat to communities across the nation. They emphasized that coordinated efforts across federal agencies are essential to achieve this goal, despite the complexities involved in such operations.
