Rep. Andy Ogles, a Republican from Tennessee, is leading an initiative with support from more than a dozen fellow House Republicans to ban the distribution of chemical abortion drugs. This proposal follows a similar effort he made in 2023.
The proposed legislation states that anyone who prescribes, dispenses, or sells drugs for the purpose of performing an abortion could face up to 25 years in prison and hefty fines. However, the ban does not apply to methods such as contraception used before conception or treatments for miscarriages.
Importantly, the proposal also ensures that women who undergo a chemical abortion will not face criminal charges. Ogles emphasizes that chemical abortions not only end a life but can also pose significant health risks to mothers. He expressed his commitment to protecting women and saving lives, noting, “Every single person is uniquely and wonderfully made.”
This measure has garnered support from various Republican representatives, reflecting a broader party stance on the issue. Ogles and his colleagues believe it is essential to prioritize life and uphold moral values.
