Shocking Attack on Virginia Councilman
A Virginia city councilman was the victim of a violent attack on Tuesday when he was set on fire outside his workplace. Authorities say the attacker, 29-year-old Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes, acted out of personal grievances rather than political motives.
The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. outside Showcase Magazine on Main Street in Danville. Witnesses reported seeing Hayes enter the building with a five-gallon bucket of gasoline, which he used to douse Councilman Lee Vogler before igniting him and running away.
Andrew Brooks, who co-owns Showcase Magazine with Vogler, shared an emotional account on Facebook, stating, “An individual forced his way into our office carrying a five-gallon bucket of gasoline and poured it on Lee.” He added that Vogler tried to escape but was pursued and set on fire.
Vogler, 38, required urgent medical care at the scene before being airlifted to a burn center. Brooks confirmed that Vogler was awake, talking, and able to identify his attacker.
“This type of senseless act of violence has to stop,” Brooks said, expressing his deep concern. “Lee is like a brother to me. He is one of the kindest, most genuine people I know.”
Police quickly arrested Hayes nearby after the incident. They clarified that he and Vogler were acquainted and that the attack stemmed from a personal dispute, not a political one.
“Their relationship was not random nor politically motivated,” said a police statement.
Vogler has been a dedicated member of the Danville City Council for over 12 years, currently serving in his fourth term. In addition to his public service work, he also has a career in media and marketing.
Authorities in Danville are asking anyone with further information about the incident to reach out to the police department.
