The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national, was apprehended after being shot and stabbed by responding officers. Reports indicate that Lakanwal entered the United States in September 2021 under Operation Allies Welcome, a program intended to provide refuge for Afghans who assisted American forces. He was later granted asylum in April 2025.

President Trump has called for an immediate and thorough review of the vetting procedures for all Afghan evacuees and other “allies” resettled in the United States.
