The Nobel Foundation has commented after a Venezuelan opposition leader gave her Nobel Peace Prize to former President Donald Trump.
Maria Corina Machado presented the award to Trump during a meeting at the White House last week, recognizing his efforts. However, the Nobel Foundation has stated that such a transfer is not in line with the prize’s rules.
The Nobel Foundation explained that the prizes are meant to honor those who have greatly benefited humankind and cannot be passed on, even symbolically.
Machado told news outlets that she gave the prize to President Trump on behalf of the people of Venezuela. She believes he deserves recognition for his work in freeing the country from Nicolás Maduro’s control.
She emphasized that Venezuelans deeply appreciate what Trump did for their freedom and for the entire region.
Trump acknowledged the gesture with gratitude.
The Nobel Institute had previously stated that a Nobel Prize cannot be revoked, shared, or transferred once it has been announced.
